One of the exciting parts of EXTREME camp was seeing younger youth so keen to read their bibles and discuss their faith so openly.
There are plenty of influences on our lives, especially when we are young. So it was great to be able to encourage these yr 6-8 crew to be aware of who they were being influenced by, to consider who they were ‘walking’ with.
Colossians 2:6-7 provides a really useful way to think about how we live once we have received Jesus as Lord.
“Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.” (Colossians 2:6-7 HCSB)
Paul gives three ways:
First, he encourages them to walk in Him, as we walk with Jesus we become more like him as he influences us and our lives.
Second, he says be rooted and built up (or strengthened) in Him. Just like we strengthen our physical bodies, so we should continue to do the same for our spiritual ones as we establish ourselves in the faith.
And third, we will overflow with thankfulness. Jesus has done so much for us, he created us and saved us, reconciling us to God, therefore our lives are to be lived in thankfulness.
This is opposed to living a religious life, where you keep rules, but rather live a life of freedom found in Jesus.
